GlomeruloNephritis Subspecialty Clinic

GlomeruloNephritis Subspecialty Clinic

The GlomeruloNephritis (GN) Subspecialty Clinic at Michigan Kidney Consultants was created to care for patients with complex kidney diseases collectively known as glomerulonephritis. These diseases include but are not limited to

  • Membranous nephropathy
  • IgA nephropathy
  • ANCA-associated vasculitis
  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
  • Lupus nephritis
  • Complement-mediated disorders / C3GN, MPGN
  • Monoclonal gammopathy–associated kidney disease and amyloidosis
  • Select cases of immune-mediated interstitial nephritis

These conditions are often complex, may progress to advanced chronic kidney disease or kidney failure, and can be overwhelming for patients and providers alike. They often require expertise that goes beyond the standard nephrology visit. Our clinic exists to meet that need.

Why Patients and Providers Choose Our GN Clinic

• Specialized Expertise
The clinic is directed by two board-certified nephrologists with extensive experience in glomerular diseases: Jamal Abukhaled, MD and Vamshi Garlapaty, MD. Our goal is to bring subspecialty-level knowledge directly to the patients who need it most.

• Treatments Based on the Latest Evidence

We offer access to modern therapies, including biologics, targeted immunosuppression, steroid-sparing regimens, complement inhibitors, and emerging treatments supported by current clinical evidence.

• Thorough, Modern Diagnostic Evaluations
Our evaluations include advanced biomarker testing (such as PLA2R, THSD7A, and complement studies), structured serologic workups, genetic testing when appropriate, and close collaboration with expert renal pathologists for biopsy interpretation.

• Personalized, Ongoing Care
We follow patients closely, tracking proteinuria, kidney function, immunologic markers, and treatment response to optimize long-term outcomes and reduce the risk of relapse.

• Easy Access and Focused Appointments
The GN clinic is held once monthly at our Royal Oak location, allowing for extended, in-depth visits dedicated exclusively to glomerular disease management.

• Shared Care with Your Nephrologist
We maintain seamless communication with referring providers, offering detailed consult notes and clear treatment recommendations so that ongoing care is coordinated and efficient.

Who Should Be Referred?

We welcome patients who have:

  • Suspected or biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis
  • Immune-mediated or complement-mediated kidney disease
  • Rapidly progressive or unexplained decline in kidney function without a clear cause
  • Difficult-to-treat or frequently relapsing glomerular disease
  • Need for advanced or steroid-sparing immunosuppressive therapy

At the GlomeruloNephritis Subspecialty Clinic, our goal is simple: to bring clarity, confidence, and expert subspecialty care to patients facing some of the most challenging kidney diseases. We are here to partner with both patients and their physicians to create treatment plans that are informed, personalized, and effective.
